Are You Sick of Reflux?

Are You Sick of Reflux? If you've ever struggled with the problem of having heartburn, reflux or GERD, you may well know that a number of terms can help you to define what is going on. It can be a little confusing - one part of your body, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), can be very far away from the other parts of your body, including your heart and lungs. The Esophageal Sphincter (ES) is the part of the esophagus where stomach contents and acids that have been fermenting in the stomach get storing. It is very far away from the front of the esophagus and the Heart of L esophagus (CH). If the esophageal sphincter is blocked, it can cause heartburn. If the esophageal sphincter is not blocked, it can cause problems for your digestive system, including several symptoms that mimic GERD or heartburn. The other part of the esophagus is the LES. It is right on the opposite side of the esophagus from the esophageal sphincter. This part of the esophagus has a valve that closes, when it has not been opened for a long time. This can result in acid reflux.GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is a form of reflux where the stomach acids that have travelled up the esophagus back into the esophagus, and cause an inflammatory reaction. This can lead to scarring and damage to the lining of the esophagus. It is a medical condition that requires medical treatment, as it can be a serious disease that can lead to serious complications. The most common symptoms of reflux are: chest pain, dyspepsia, heartburn, heavy gas, or trouble swallowing. The esophageal sphincter should be assessed and tested regularly. Some people who have acid reflux are unaware that they suffer from this medical condition. GERD is a common problem in the US, and many people do not think that they suffer from acid reflux, even though they may feel it when they have a meal. What they may not realize is that they are experiencing serious problems with their digestive system. If you have GERD, you will likely ha ve to take frequent breaks from eating and drinking while you try to control your reflux. You may also be required to change your eating habits. The important thing is to remember that reflux is not always a serious medical condition.Reflux is not the same as heartburn. Reflux is a very serious medical condition that causes inflammation, acid reflux, and in some cases, blockage of the LES, and is usually a sign of a more serious disease.

What is it Like to Attend University of Massachusetts

What is it Like to Attend University of Massachusetts The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Jessica is an Austin tutor specializing in many areas of math including Algebra tutoring, Calculus tutoring, Geometry tutoring, and more. She graduated from University of Massachusetts in 2011 with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics. See what she had to say about her undergraduate experience: VT:Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jessica: UMass Amherst has what I like to think of as the quintessential campus setting. Amherst, MA is a small town in Western Massachusetts of which the UMass campus is the center. It takes about 20 minutes to walk the farthest distance across campus, or about a 10 minute bike ride. There are buses running every 15 minutes along various routes throughout the day. Driving to class is an option but with limited parking available, the easiest way to travel across campus is the bus, bike, or your own two feet. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jessica: I always had an easy time getting in touch with professors, advisers, and teaching assistants. Professors and TAs each have drop-in office hours at least 3 times per week for 1-2 hours outside of classroom time. This is a great opportunity for students to approach them with questions in a 1-on-1 setting. Most professors even make themselves available by email during the week and weekends. Academic advisers are always available by appointment to talk about class selection or any other questions a student may have. The large number of advisers on staff allows them to easily manage the large number of students on campus. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jessica: Dorm life on campus varies depending on which residential area you are placed in. Each area has its own dining hall, all of which have an excellent variety of food to choose from, but the quality of food honestly differs depending on which hall you are eating in. I lived in the same residential area for two years and I found the rooms to be spacious, the dorms to be clean, and the food to be excellent. But, the walk to class from my dorm was farther than others. Other dorms are also closer to the Campus Center where social events take place. Overall, each area has its pros and cons. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Jessica: Id say the programs in the Isenberg School of Management are best represented at UMass. This Business School is well accredited and very hard to get into. I studied Mathematics because it was always my passion and I knew I wanted to go into a career where a good background in Math was needed. The Math Department had excellent professors and resources, but we did seem to be overshadowed by the Business School (something that I think happens at all colleges). VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jessica: I had a somewhat abnormal college experience because I was a member of the Varsity swim team. This means I came into freshmen year with a built-in group of 30 friends on the team so it was very easy for me to meet people. The friends that I had outside of the team have all said it was easy to meet people freshman year in the dorms. Its common to be placed in an all-freshmen dorm so everyone there is eager to meet people. Greek life has a small presence at UMass and is not necessary to have a good social life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jessica: The Career Center is always open for students to come in and review their resumes or talk about career options. They are helpful in providing information for upcoming career fairs where many companies come to recruit. UMass doesnt get as many of the big name companies that you would find at an Ivy League school but there are plenty of reputable names represented at the career fairs. Each fair is usually for a specific major or field so it is easy to narrow down which companies youre interested in. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jessica: There is plenty of quiet space around campus for students to study or do homework. The main library has 26 floors for students to use but it still gets very crowded and hard to find a seat on weeknights. The student union is usually less crowded and still has the space available for students. Most classroom buildings have lounges or even libraries of their own for students to use during off hours. Its best to seek out these lesser known study areas when looking for the best place to get work done. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jessica: Amherst, MA is a great college town. Its about a 10 minute walk from campus to the downtown area where youll find local clothing boutiques, ice cream parlors, pubs, and restaurants of many different types of food. About a 5 minute drive down the nearest highway is a shopping mall with a movie theater, more restaurants, and bigger clothing stores. Most students hang out in the downtown area on nights and weekends as this is where the bars and restaurants are. The UMass campus is also about a 20 minute drive to the nearest mountain range where many students like to go for weekend hikes. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jessica: There are about 22,000 undergraduate students at UMass which sounds like a lot. During freshman year, this feels like a lot because the majority of the lower level classes will have anywhere from 100-300 students in it. This number dramatically changes as you take higher level courses later in your college career. Its not uncommon to have 10-20 students in these classes. The availability of professors during office hours makes a class of any size seem small because of how easy it is to get extra help. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jessica: The first exam I ever took in college was in Anatomy and Physiology. I had been to every class and took diligent notes but I still didnt feel prepared for the test. The professor was holding an optional exam review the night before the test where she said she would answer any questions students had. I decided not to go, thinking that I could be more productive on my own. I got a good amount of studying done but after the exam I still didnt feel completely confident that I knew everything. I talked to a few students from class who went to the review and they raved about how helpful it was and how prepared it made them feel for the test. From then on I always took advantage of the extra help that professors provided. Check out Jessicas tutoring profile. An Introverts Guide to Beating Imposter Syndrome - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / An Introvert’s Guide to Beating Imposter Syndrome - Introvert Whisperer An Introvert’s Guide to Beating Imposter Syndrome Have you ever felt like a fraud in the workplace? Like at any moment, your boss or colleagues might walk over to your desk, tap you on the shoulder and tell you they’ve finally realized you’re not qualified for the job? If so, you’re not alone. About 70% of people feel the same, grappling with a feeling named imposter syndrome, according to a 2011 study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Science. Psychology Today defines imposter syndrome as “a psychological term referring to a pattern of behavior where people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud.” Imposter syndrome may also bring with it symptoms such as: Fear of failure Routinely downplaying your strengths and achievements, and instead seeing them as over-estimated or exaggerated by others Attributing your accomplishments to circumstantial factors, such as “I just got lucky” Overworking in attempt to compensate for perceived deficits At some point in our lives, many of us will experience imposter syndrome. However, it may be more common for introverts than it is for extroverts. Introverts tend to be their own worst critics. They’re often inclined to distrust external effects and will downplay or ignore outside feedback, regardless of how positive or effusive, in favor of their own self-critiques. With that said, it may be the case that introverts are more sensitive to negative feedback, which only serves to perpetuate their already strict self-standards. If left to their own devices, introverts can self-reflect themselves into their inner critic status and develop imposter syndrome while there. Even people who have achieved spectacular feats have encountered feelings of imposter syndrome. Actress Emma Watson, a self-confessed introvert, once told Vogue, “When I was younger, I just did it. I just acted. It was just there. So now when I receive recognition for my acting, I feel incredibly uncomfortable. I tend to turn in on myself. I feel like an impostor. It was just something I did.” If these symptoms of imposter syndrome feel all too familiar, here are a few tips to overcome them: Talk About It Introverts tend to keep their thoughts and feelings to themselves, but discussing your case of imposter syndrome with others can help to normalize your feelings. Start small and confide in a close friend or family member. You may also find it helpful and comforting to join a support group or online organization specific to introverts. They may be able to relate to your feelings and provide you with some tips to set you in the right direction. Practice Self-Care A great way to overcome the symptoms of imposter syndrome is by dedicating time in your day to mental health. Practice positive affirmations: replace any doubts or negativity with a positive statement until this becomes the default pathway in your brain. Keep your brain and body in peak condition with good quality sleep, nutrients, hydration, exercise, and mindfulness. Accept Your Imperfections If you’re constantly seeking perfection, you’ll never reach it, and you’ll always believe you’re a fraud. If you’re going for perfect all the time, it may well be someone else’s version of perfect. Make sure you’re living for your own unique fulfillment. It can be beneficial to create a vision board, which is a collage of images and words representing your personal wishes or goals to serve as inspiration or motivation. Appreciate Your Accomplishments This is the big one â€" you got to where you are now because of your own accomplishments. This may be hard to realize, or even accept, but it’s so important. The opportunities you said yes to, the choices you made, the knowledge you’ve learned, and the time you’ve dedicated all got you to where you are currently in life. Write down all your successes to date on a piece of paper. Then, write down all the things you did to get there and stick it somewhere as a daily reminder of everything you’ve accomplished. Imposter syndrome may be difficult to deal with, but introverts can rest easy knowing that you’re not alone. Have you ever experienced imposter syndrome? What are your techniques for dealing with it? By Marie Let me emphasize that Self-Promotion doesn’t have to be obnoxious to be effective.   But, if you don’t Self-Promote you, who will? The 4 Best Resources to Practice Singing On Your Own

The 4 Best Resources to Practice Singing On Your Own Suzy S. As youre learning to sing, dont forget that often the magic happens while youre practicing by yourself, outside of your lessons! And with  the right  resources available, practicing can be fun! Here, voice teacher  Molly R.  shares 4 of her favorites When you sign up for voice lessons (and if you haven’t yet done so, there are many fabulous voice teachers  to choose from on TakeLessons), you will likely need to purchase sheet music for your solo pieces. But what other resources are essential for making your studies more effective? How can you continue to learn to sing by yourself, when your voice teacher isnt around? Weve showcased a few online resources for singers  on the blog before; now, here are a few more both print and digital resources that you can use to practice singing on your own. 1. Our Singing Lessons Playlist on YouTube Our singing lessons playlist is full of quick, go-to tutorials. With more than 30 videos, you’re not going to be bored! Some of these exercises emphasize breathing, and other skills include dynamics, articulation, and resonance. Expect a wonderful variety here, from basic scales to playful warm-ups with nonsense words and fun phrases! 2. Funky n Fun Vocal Exercises by Kim Chandler These recorded vocal exercises are phenomenal. I use them with all my students young, old, classical singers, pop singers, everyone! They  not only emphasize basic vocal technique, they  help you develop your ear. Ms. Chandler, a seasoned session singer with a wonderful voice, encourages you to trust yourself and “jam” with her over the tracks. Some of them are based on hooks to well-known funk songs. Who wouldn’t love warming up with Stevie Wonder tunes? Some of my students have  liked these exercises  so much that after we use them in lessons, they buy them to use at home or in the car and some even do them with their families. (Yes, they really are  that fun!) You can download these exercises on Kim Chandlers  website or purchase them in CD format. 3. Estelle Liebling’s Vocal Course This couldn’t be a bigger contrast to Ms.  Chandler’s method, since  Estelle Lieblings books  are definitely “old school”! However, I firmly believe that we must cross-train in vocal studies. Ms. Liebling was one of the finest vocal instructors in NYC years ago, and her famous pupils include opera diva Beverly Sills and the great Meryl Streep. Her training is based in bel canto, the European school of beautiful and healthy singing. Most of the emphasis is in singing with a clear and pleasing tone. These books are available on Amazon, and you can purchase the one most appropriate  for your voice type: soprano, mezzo/contralto, tenor, or baritone/bass. If you’re a commercial music type, don’t let the term “classical technique” scare you! The vocal exercises in her books are actually quite simple and will help you develop your voice, too, and help you learn to sing by yourself, in between  your lessons. Your teacher will agree! 4. Easy Warm-Ups by CoreSinging founder Dr. Meribeth Dayme Who says you have to spend a long time warming up? And who says your warm-ups have to be traditional scales? They don’t! Dr. Dayme, founder of CoreSinging, has developed a fun way to warm up your voice anywhere, anytime. These vocal warm-ups are different, because she uses playful sounds (sirens, humming and chewing, silly conversations, etc.) to get everything going. I love doing these myself, as it brings out my inner kid. It doesn’t feel like “work” at all, and my students agree!  These can also be purchased on Amazon for instant download. While there may be a ton of resources to choose from out there, it’s important that you seek out a variety to keep it fresh! Remember that it’s super important to  put in the time to strengthen your technique by yourself, outside of your private voice lessons. With resources as wonderful as these, its easy and fun to learn how to sing! Readers, what other resources do you use to practice singing  by yourself? Leave a comment below! Post Author:  Molly R. Molly R. teaches online and in-person singing lessons in Hayward, CA. Her specialties include teaching beginner vocalists, shy singers, children, teens, lapsed singers, and older beginners. Algebra 2 Help

Algebra 2 Help Algebra II involves solving linear equations. Linear equation with one variable is the simplest form of equation. The equations involving only linear polynomials we call as linear equations. The highest power of the variable appearing in linear equation is 1. Any value of the variable which when substituted in an equation makes its both sides equal is called a solution of the equation. To solve an equation we need to follow two permissible rules. They are:- Addition Subtraction Rule If any number is added or subtracted from both sides of an equation, the resulting equation has the same solution as the original. Multiplication Division Rule If each side of equation is multiplied or divided by non-zero number, the resulting equation has the same solution as the original. This can be easily understood by taking the separate examples for using the rules Example 1:- Find the solution of x 15 + 7 = 25 Solution 1:- Use Addition Subtraction Rule To eliminate 15, add 15 on both sides x 15 + 15 + 7= 25 + 15 x + 7= 40 To eliminate + 7, subtract 7 on both sides x + 7 7 = 40 7 x = 33 Hence the required solution This problem helps to understand the Addition Subtraction rule Example 2:- Find the solution of 2 x / 3 = 8 Solution 2:- Use Multiplication and Division rule. Multiply by 3 on both sides, 3 in the denominator gets cancelled 3 X 2x/3 = 8 X 3 2x = 24 Divide by 2 on both sides X= 12; Solution obtained These examples we applied basic rules for solving linear equation with one variable.

LSAT Tip of the Week Diagramming Logical Reasoning Arguments

LSAT Tip of the Week Diagramming Logical Reasoning Arguments LSAT Law School Blog This week we will review how to diagram an argument in the logical reasoning section of the LSAT. You may have heard about diagramming logic games, but how would you diagram logical reasoning arguments? Well, it is pretty simple, and it will go a long way to helping you get to the correct answer. There are three things to look for in your argument. First, find what the argument is claiming or concluding. This will generally be something that is backed by some sort of fact (data/evidence). Next, locate what the argument is conveying. This message will always be true and ties into the conclusion that you found in the first step. Finally, find the evidence. The evidence backs up the first two steps and does not necessarily have to be numbers or data, it could come in any form. While diagramming in logic games entails drawing it out, here it could differ. It may help you to make small bullets points when you first start thinking about logical reasoning questions in this 3-step process, b ut try to train yourself to do this in your head. By automatically jumping to locating these three points of the question, you will be able to break the information apart and organize it in a manner that will help you find the correct answer in the smallest frame of time. Brain Rules Part 2 6 More Ways to Improve Brain Function

Brain Rules Part 2 6 More Ways to Improve Brain Function Improving Academic Performance In this second installment of Brain Rules, I’ll introduce 6 additionalbrain rules to leverage in understanding the ways we think, learn and retain new information. Hopefully, you can incorporate some of these into your routine to help you study more efficiently and effectively. ATTENTION Despite the proliferation of technology in our lives; tools and resources, to help us multi-task for school and work, the human brain can only focus on one thing at a time. Therefore, it’s imperative to find a nice quiet place to study and focus on the task at hand. Sure, you can listen to some music on your earbuds if that helps you tune out the world around you, but you should not be simultaneously texting your friends or surfing-the-web. When we are learning new information in a course lecture or a presentation, most audiences check out after 10 minutes. Therefore, the speaker must know how to engage their audience through anecdotes and a colorful delivery. We can put these tools to use when studying as well. If we simply read our textbook for hours in preparation for an exam, it probably won't hold our attention either. After reading a chapter in your book, take a quick break to watch a video corresponding to the subject matter. You can find these tools via great sites like Khan Academy or Crash Course videos cover material from complex mathematics to chemistry and even US History. This way, you are more likely to pay attention and retain the material. SENSORY INTEGRATION The reason that we are more likely to retain information that keeps our attention is that it usually stimulates more than one of our senses. Therefore, when we enhance our study sessions beyond reading and taking notes, we are practicing sensory integration by stimulating more of our senses at once. Humans' senses evolved overtime to work together. For instance, our vision influences our hearing, so when we see something and hear it these two senses work in tandem to better cement a memory. How can you incorporate sensory integration into your study skills? Try to infuse your learning process with as many senses as possible. Read something, write it, recite it aloud, draw a diagram of it â€" this way you are incorporating; sight, touch, sound, and vision increasing your chances of retaining the information. SLEEP Just because your body is asleep does not mean your brain is. Neurons fire in our brain all night long while we sleep, perhaps replaying what we’ve learned that day. We need sleep to learn. A lack of sleep impedes our attention, memory, quantitative skills, logical reasoning and manual dexterity. These are all skills we utilize when studying, learning, retaining and recalling information. What is the point of putting in many hours of studying only to be unable to retain and recall the information due to a lack of sleep? Don’t pull all-nighters. Whether studying for finals or a major college or professional school admissions exam, the night before the test you should be focusing on de-stressing, eating a healthy dinner and going to sleep at a reasonable hour. If you have given yourself adequate time to prepare for this crucial exam, you should not feel hard pressed to do last minute studying. EXERCISE Exercise boosts brain power by increasing oxygen flow to the brain, raising our mental sharpness and cognition. In recent years, colleagues have began going for “walking meetings,” instead of being cooped up in an office or conference room, co-workers will step outside to walk and talk. Aside from getting some fresh air or a change of scenery, this type of meeting also promotes getting moving, rather than remaining sedentary at a desk. In addition to this, the exercise during your walk gets your blood pumping and ultimately your brain firing. You can even put this into practice when studying. When you hit a wall and your mind starts to wander, go for a brief walk, this will increase blood flow to your brain and help you to reset. You could also walk with a classmate and quiz each other over the material along the way. EXPLORATION We learn through exploration, and not by passively taking in information. Just as the steps in the scientific method, we learn by observation, hypothesis, experiment and conclusion. When learning new information of any subject matter, not just science, it pays to put these same steps to use. Observe the material, whether from a class lecture or reading your textbook, hypothesize regarding the larger implications of this new material, what is its place in the larger narrative or subject matter? What conclusions can you draw from the new information? Remember to remain flexible and not rigid when learning, our brains are malleable into adulthood so we can continue to learn and take in new information. If you are rigid and regimented in the ways you learn and have reached a plateau in your studying, try infusing your learning with a new method, approach problems from a different perspective and you may be more successful. WIRING Every brain is wired differently, no two humans have the same brain, not even twins. The way our school system is set up is counter-intuitive to this fact as we are all graded on the same scale and held to the same standards, despite learning and understanding information in totally different ways. How does understanding this impact your everyday learning? First off, stop comparing yourself to your peers. If we all are wired differently, then it is unfair to compare our ability to learn, comprehend or perform to other classmates. This is not to say that you should be totally oblivious to the performance of those around you, because ultimately a certain amount of competition can be healthy. But overall, it would serve you better to tap into the ways you learn, and whichtactics are most affective for you to learn and retain new information. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Understanding how ourbrains are wired and the ways they operate is an invaluable tool in using our mental acumen to the fullest potential. Pinpointing the tactics we respond to when absorbing information and surefire ways to retain that information can be priceless in our pursuit of learning.
